ECS was recently notified that we have won approval to be part of the City’s Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) program, funded by the Division of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). The endorsement of ECS by community members, local leaders, and elected officials highlights the visibility, strong reputation, and deep presence ECS has built within the communities surrounding SBCRC. Participation in this program will allow us to expand our capacity to reach even more people, making this an important milestone.
Please find more information about the NAC award below. I am grateful to all the ECS staff and community partners who contributed to this wonderful outcome.
– Anne Rice-Burgess, Chief Executive Officer
Why is this important for ECS and the communities we serve?
The NAC program is designed to actively engage community residents and connect them with opportunities to enhance economic conditions based on their expressed needs, interests, and ambitions, all while removing barriers to accessing city programs.
This initiative aligns with our mission at ECS, specifically our place-based approach at our St. Barnabas Community Resource Center and will serve current participants and expand our capacity to reach more residents.
How do NACs work?
-
NACs are typically run by nonprofit organizations with strong ties to their communities.
-
They receive funding and oversight from DHCD to implement programs and initiatives aligned with city goals.
-
NAC governing committees and boards often include residents and local stakeholders who help guide the organization's priorities and activities.
-
NACs foster communication and collaboration between city agencies and neighborhoods, ensuring residents can access the resources they need to thrive.
Why did we pursue this opportunity?
Running a Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) benefits ECS and our communities in several ways:
-
Community Impact: Expands our reach, particularly in housing assistance, coaching, community engagement, and access to city programs.
-
Community Voice and Power: Strengthens local leadership and self-sufficiency among residents.
-
Funding: Provides an additional revenue source from DHCD to support our services.
-
Advocacy: Enhances our ability to influence city policies and programs while reinforcing ECS as a trusted, visible, and influential community partner.
Will this impact our existing Community Advisory Council?
Our Community Advisory Council will continue to advise on broader community issues and concerns. It will also interface with the NAC to ensure comprehensive representation and collaboration.
What’s Next?
The rollout will include research, hiring, and publicity. We anticipate being fully operational within six months.
